Devoted to the Life of Passion

Welcome to our website! Currently a work in progress and an active labor of love and passion, we are hopeful to have updates of our progress both on our website as well as on the development of our land in 2025. As we are only two people taking on such a large task of web design, construction, and managing our online gift shop, we cannot promise when exactly our website will have completed its full revamp but also did not want to have an empty site for our visitors. Though there is not much to explore here yet, you can read a bit about our story below and sign up for our e-newsletter for updates on when our website is ready for launch. We thank all of our supporters for your patience and understanding! During this time, we truly appreciate you taking the time of day to read our messages and learn who we are. All the help that we receive now and going forward paves the path for the future of our convent. If you have an interest in what you can do to support us as we're developing, our shop and donation portal are linked above. Each and every one of our supporters are most gratefully in our prayers every day!

Who We Are

We are the Passionist Servants of the Sorrowful Hearts of Jesus and Mary, a developing hermitage devoted to the Passion of Jesus Christ and the Sorrows of the Blessed Virgin Mary currently inhabiting the Heart of Sorrows Hermitage in Tennessee, USA. Founded by Sister Charles Michael and Sister Mary Gabriel of the Precious Blood of Jesus in the summer of 2019, our retreat serves the special purpose of providing professed laity members who were unable to enter traditional monastic life due to restrictions from chronic health conditions, injuries, and other medical exclusions the opportunity to live in the vocation of contemplative prayer and worship. We value the rich history and early traditions of the Church as taught by the Apostles and the early Church Fathers and are especially dedicated to remembering the Passion of Jesus Christ and the rule of the founder of the Congregation of the Passionists, Saint Paul of the Cross. What we seek to do is allow the education of the Gospels and knowledge of our faith to be accessible and easily understood by all who seek it, as so often other facets of life in today's world have taken priority over furthering our spiritual well-being. As we take the time to culminate our careful research and personal paths of education into this humble website, we look forward to one day being a stable resource for any and all to come closer to Our Lord and His Passion. We believe that the life of contemplative prayer is for all who are called to it and are dedicated to providing outreach to the sick, needy, dying, and oppressed who make up the "Crucified of today", as well as providing educational resources about the live of the hermit. We thank you for taking the time to read our story and ask humbly that you would please pray for us as we continue forward in the development of our convent as we hope to one day welcome our supporters in person to our completed cloistered abbey and retreat house!

The Life of Passion

We are the Passionist Servants of the Sorrowful Hearts of Jesus and Mary, two married hermits who are devoted to the Passion of Jesus Christ and the Sorrows of the Virgin Mary currently inhabiting the Heart of Sorrows Hermitage in Tennessee, USA. Founded by Brother Charles Michael and Sister Mary Gabriel of the Precious Blood of Jesus in the summer of 2019, our retreat serves the special purpose of providing professed laity members who were unable to enter traditional monastic life due to restrictions from chronic health conditions and later called to the sacraments of marriage and parenthood the opportunity to live in the vocation of the hermit. We value the rich history and early traditions of the Church as taught by the Apostles and the early Church Fathers and are especially dedicated to remembering the Passion of Jesus Christ and the rule of the founder of the Congregation of the Passionists, Saint Paul of the Cross. We believe that the life of contemplative prayer is for all who are called to it and are dedicated to providing outreach to the sick, needy, dying, and oppressed who make up the "Crucified of today", as well as providing educational resources about the live of the hermit.

Passionist History

-

The Passionist Order was founded in 1720 in Rome, Italy by Saint Paul of the Cross (born Paolo Francesco Danei) with early support from his brother John Baptist Danei. At the age of 19, Paul knew in his heart that he was being called to the life of solitude and prayer, but it wasn't until he was 26 that he felt affirmed in his prayer that he was being invited by God to found a community of those who would promote the Love of God through the teaching of the Passion of Christ, which he called “the greatest work of divine Love”. He was clothed in the black habit of the hermit by Bishop Gattinara of Alessandria, and he embarked on a 40-day retreat from November 22, 1720 to January 1, 1721 at the Church of St. Charles in Castellazo, where he began the work of his first draft of the Rule of Life for the order.Initially called The Poors of Jesus, it was later named Congregation of the Passion of Jesus Christ, or the Passionist Order. The first Retreat (the name of Passionist monasteries), the Monastery of the Presentation in the Temple, was opened in 1737 on Monte Argentario with only nine members living in the community. Throughout his life, Paul saw a slow growth of his community, as many were turned away from the Passionist Order due to its austere rules of asceticism; namely that of fasting, penance, and contemplative prayer practices, of which members of the order were expected to participate in no less than three hours each day in addition to the daily readings of the Divine Office. Silence was to be observed all day until after supper for a short recreation period before retiring, and is a historically discalced congregation, wearing only sandals rather than shoes. At the time his death, the Passionist Order had only one hundred and eighty members of Fathers and Brothers across twelve retreats in Italy, with the order of Passionist Nuns being only founded four years prior to his death by both him and Mother Mary Crucified (born Faustina Gertrude Costantini) in 1771, with only ten members at the opening of its first retreat in Corneto, Italy.

-

Today the Passionist Order, though still much smaller and lesser-known than other orders, has grown significantly in the last 300 years, with over 2,500 professed members across more than 60 countries. Passionists of today provide a variety of ministries, with Fathers and Brothers providing pastoral care and ministering to the sick, needy, homeless, and marginalized who are "the Crucified of today" when not in silent contemplation at their retreats, taking every act of charity and labor as an opportunity to not only spread the the Passion of Christ but also to bear witness to the sufferings of the world in honor of His Passion. Passionist Nuns and Sisters are often completely cloistered, devoting their lives to contemplative prayer for the conversion of sinners, reflection of the Passion, and for some, having ecstatic, mystic visions just as many Passionist Saints (including Saint Paul of the Cross himself) had in their lives.

Passionist Charism

-

"The Passion of Christ is the greatest and most overwhelming work of God's love."

Saint Paul of the Cross, Founder of the Passionist Order

As Passionists, we are guided by the rule of our founder St. Paul of the Cross, whose life and work were centered on drawing all people to the foot of the Cross of Jesus. We believe that the greatest act of love and service we can offer is to be present to those who suffer most: the poor, the sick, the homeless, the hungry, the abused, and the marginalized who make up the "Crucified of today".Our work is grounded in the belief that every act of service is an opportunity to witness to the love of Christ. Whether we are serving in the hospital room, visiting a lonely soul, providing a meal for the homeless, or sharing the Word of God on the street, we strive to live out our Passionist charism to love deeply, serve humbly, and live simply. Through our ministries, we aim to offer not only physical care but also spiritual nourishment to those who are hurting, lost, or searching for the peace that only Christ can provide. It is our mission to live in perpetual remembrance and mourning of the suffering and death of Our Lord, as well as joyous celebration of the world's salvation through His sacrifice. We seek to live in imitation of the life of Jesus Christ, the Apostles, and the Passionist Saints. As a charismatic order, we are deeply inspired by mystic experiences and are called to a life of separation and contemplative prayer when we are not ministering and providing charitable outreach, as was the traditional way of life for the earliest Passionist Fathers.Through a life of passion, we hope to draw closer to the foot of the Cross and inspire those who are in need of Our Lord's mercy to abandon lives of temporal pleasure and gain the strength through God's grace to lift up their own crosses and be crucified with Our Heavenly Spouse who suffered so greatly in love for us all.

“I have been crucified with Christ; yet still I live. Now it is not I who lives, but it is Christ who liveth within me; and the life which I now live in flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me, and delivered Himself for me.”

Paul the Apostle's Epistle to the Galatians 2:20

Our Vows

PovertyWe vow to live minimally and humbly, renouncing the false treasures of the physical world and look forward instead to the true richness of Heaven. We rely solely on the generosity of our donors as well as the labor of our oblates to support the Hermitage's growth as well as the basic living necessities for the Hermits.ObedienceWe vow to live in obedience to the commandments of Our Father, Creator of Heaven and Earth, the teachings of Jesus Christ His Son and Our Savior, the motherly wisdom of the Holy Spirit, the core traditional values of the one true Holy Apostolic Church and the rule of the founder of the Congregation of Passionists, Saint Paul of the Cross.AbstinenceWe vow to live wisely in strict moderation of indulgences and avoidance to the best of our ability of all occasion of sin, being also wise as to not think in our foolish pride that we are incapable of being entrapped in wicked temptation and the snares of the enemy due to our fallen nature as humans.

PenanceWe vow to do due penance in offering of repentance and reconciliation to Our Lord for all of our sins of which we detest and reject but acknowledge our weakness to. We vow to mortify the eyes which covet and concern themselves with appearances, the ears which listen to gossip and scandal, the tongue which desires all that is pleasurable to the palate and numbing to the senses, the hands that wish to be gratified in idleness and absence, and the flesh that desires comforts and luxuries. We believe that penance done with an open heart full of love of God may draw the penitent soul closer to the foot of the Cross in understanding of only a fraction of what Our Lord endured in His agony and suffering of His Passion. To read more about the rich history of penance and its vital importance, please click here.CharityWe vow to help the helpless and be a voice to the voiceless, extending both physical and spiritual aid to the poor, sick, needy, dying, abandoned, desolate, and oppressed who make up the "Crucified of today." We must reject all glimmering falsities of our own comfort and seek not to be helped for our own troubles, but seek to help others in theirs, trusting completely in Our Lord that we may be bestowed blessings should He see us so worthy of such graces.MinistryWe vow to educate and preach the word of God and invite all who we touch to reflect upon the sacrifices, suffering, and death of Jesus Christ. By reflecting on the greatest work of love humankind has ever known, the Passion of Jesus Christ, we are called to witness the closest we may be to the beatific vision of Heaven here on Earth.
